(WTOC) - The City of Tybee Island cancelled their New Yearâs Eve celebrations, but all the while city officials say a lot of people have still chosen Tybee as the place where they want to be to ring in the new year. City Manager Shawn Gillen says over the last few days Tybeeâs traffic numbers have been up and many of the rental properties are booked. He says the cityâs main concern is people following the rules and the COVID-19 protocols while still having fun. ....
The more white we see, the more intense the storm could still become. i know it s close to land right now, but it s in the gulf stream. it s in the warmest water out there in the atlantic other than what was in the bahamas. category 2, category 2, category 2 making a run at charleston for tomorrow, pushing a lot of water into charleston harbor. same story for tybee. same story as we work our way into hilton head. so there will be water pushing onshore. that s the storm surge. here s the latest radar. still trying to get the middle part of the eye. it gulped in a bunch of dry air overnight, which really helped out. it just tore the entire thing apart. didn t have an eye, looked horrible when i walked in this morning. we re thinking, this is over, this is done. now that it s back over the water, it s trying to reintensify. so maybe it isn t quite done, but it isn t ever going to be 180-mile-per-hour storm again. it will still be packing a punch. it will still be packing a pretty decent, ....
Florida with enormous force. it s moved up now over to the jacksonville area delivering historic storm surge there and it is not over yet. let s get to chad myers in the weather center right now. the most urgent question, chad, where is it where is it going and what do people need to know. it is right there, southwest of jacksonville. where is it going? to the northwest. where is it affecting the most? anywhere from charleston down through jacksonville with flash flood emergencies going on for record flooding. more flooding going on now than during hurricane matthew in savannah or in tybee. more flooding than 1964 all the way back to the 1860s before there were even gauges on the st. johns river in jacksonville. all because the wind is blowing the water here. it s the same surge you always get with a hurricane. ....
Severe weather center. we heard nick talking about he s in the eye of this thing now. once that eye hits what does that mean for charleston and the trajectory after that? well, that means we re going to set a significant surge in charlton after the high tide. a few hours away. the high tide surge in st. augustine created deadly flooding. same tour tybee, and now it s moved away from savannah. into hilton head. into ed distoe island. into folly beach. charleston, we re expecting a big surge from you, especially at that high tide. over six feet. we had almost seven feet in savannah and tybee. we know there s damage there, we don t know how much just yet. we also know there s going to be fresh water. rain falling, 10 inches of water ....
