Gaston County Man Who Drove SUV Into Restaurant, Killing 2 Relatives, Sentenced To At Least 38 Years

Former Gaston County businessman Roger Self has been sentenced to at least 38 years in prison for driving an SUV into a crowded restaurant in May 2018, killing his daughter and daughter-in-law, and seriously injuring his son and wife.
The sentence was handed down in a Gaston County courtroom Friday by Judge Athena Brooks. She sentenced Self to a minimum of 230 months or maximum 288 months in prison for the murder of his daughter, Katelyn Self, and another minimum 230 months or maximum 288 months for the murder of his daughter-in-law, Amanda George Self.
She also sentenced Self to a minimum 70 months to maximum 96 months for injuring his son, Joshua, and a minimum 70 months to maximum 96 months for injuring his wife, Dianne. Those sentences are concurrent, meaning they can be served at the same time he serves his murder sentences. ....

(Henderson County, NC) There s no decision in the removal hearing for District Attorney Greg Newman. The three-day proceedings wrapped up Wednesday, but the judge said he ll issue an order later. Newman was facing scrutiny from sexual assault victims who claim he mishandled cases. He s served as district attorney for Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties for nearly eight years.

Gaston man awaits fate for killing family by driving car into diner

The facts are not up for debate.
Roger Self, a prominent Gaston County businessman, used his Jeep Grand Cherokee as a weapon on May 20, 2018, and drove it into a Bessemer City restaurant where his family was seated to eat.
In the process, he killed his daughter, Gaston County Sheriff s Cpl. Katelyn Self, and his daughter-in-law Amanda Self, a CaroMont Health emergency room supervising nurse.
Several others were also injured, including his wife, Dianne, son, Josh, who was the husband of Amanda Self, and their two children, ages 12 and 8 at the time.
Self has already admitted guilt, pleading guilty Jan. 25 to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of his two family members. ....

Gaston man who killed family by driving into restaurant faces fate

Starting Tuesday, a judge tasked with determining an appropriate punishment will begin to hear evidence in a case that garnered international attention. The judge will have to weigh factors such as Self s mental health at the time against the fact he killed two people who trusted him.
Realistically, the 65-year-old Self could face a minimum of 12 years in prison or up to 70 years, minus the almost three years he has spent in jail awaiting his fate, said his defense attorney, Rick Beam.
From suicide to homicide
On Saturday, May 19, 2018, Self went to Shooter s Express in Mount Holly and purchased a handgun. When he bought the gun, he had thoughts of suicide or homicide toward his own family, according to a search warrant affidavit connected to the case. ....

A former Dallas businessman pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder Monday for killing two family members and injuring others by driving his Jeep through a restaurant where he and his family had been seated.
