STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. New York State Police and local law-enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols in an enforcement initiative cracking down on distracted driving this weekend.
The crackdown which lasts until Monday, April 12 is part of the national “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” campaign to raise awareness about distracted driving and its consequences.
The effort comes after State Trooper Joe Gallagher died last month from the injuries he sustained in 2017 after a distracted driver struck him while he was helping a disabled motorist.
ALBANY, N.Y. â New York State Police and local law enforcement will participate in the national U Drive. U Text. U Pay. mobilization to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month nationwide. Law enforcement throughout the state will be stepping up patrols during this enforcement initiative, which runs from Thursday, April 8 through Monday, April 12. As we saw with the tragic death of Trooper Joe Gallagher, distracted driving can have deadly consequences, and it will not be tolerated in the State of New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Today and always, I urge everyone to do their part to drive responsibly and help save lives, Cuomo added.Â
