Black Restaurant Week highlights six Las Vegas restaurants with special menus


Black Restaurant Week comes to Las Vegas through March 21, showcasing six local restaurants and highlighting reviving and saving the Black restaurant industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurants offer prix-fixe brunch, lunch, and dinner menus.
Pots, the Egyptian restaurant from Iman Haggag, has a shawarma combo with crispy cauliflower shawarma sandwich, Egyptian fries, and a choice of karkadeh (hibiscus extract tea) or iced tea for $14.95 at her restaurant on South Rainbow Boulevard.
Simply Pure by chef Stacey Dougan in the Downtown Container Park offers vegan and vegetarian fare. For Black Restaurant Week, diners can order a nacho grande with lime corn chips, vegan protein beef, cheddar cheese sauce, scallions, sour cream, and pico de gallo for $7.95 for a half order or $12.95 for a full order. Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles from founder Larry “Lo-Lo” White offers Southern fare such as fried chicken and soul food in the northwest. ....

Editor s note: The story was corrected to show that Trina Jiles, 48, was the first Black woman firefighter in Clark County and the second in the state of Nevada. 
Trina Jiles felt like she could conquer anything whenever she put on her fire gear. 
She was confident and fearless, despite being a “girly-girl” as she jokingly described herself. 
Jiles was the first Black woman in Clark County to become a firefighter and the second in the state. She was just 22 years old when she joined the Clark County Fire Department (the largest in the state) in January 1996.  ....
