hello and welcome to bbc news. i m lukwesa burak. three members of the world food programme are among nearly 70 people reported to have been killed as rival wings of sudan s armed forces, battle for power. the wfp has now halted operations in the country. these are the latest pictures from the capital, khartoum, where black smoke can be seen rising above the city. there are fears the violence will delay the planned transition to civilian rule in sudan. egypt and south sudan have offered to mediate. latest reports say that fighting has now broken out across other parts of the country with eyewitness accounts of sudanese army strikes in the city of omdurman. the target is a base of the paramilitary, rapid support forces, north east of khartoum. beverly ochieng is from the bbc s monitoring service and has the latest from nairobi. some of the latest tallies we are seeing from a prominent doctors union is that nearly 70 people have been killed injust two days of viole ....

motorways in england, is being cancelled over safety concerns and costs. hello and welcome to bbc news. our breaking news this hour, four people have been killed in a shooting at a 16th birthday party in the us state of alabama. it happened in the town of dadeville, at around 10:30pm local time on saturday evening. at least 20 people were shot and wounded most of them teenagers. these are pictures of the scene. at this stage, there is no official confirmation about what led to the shooting, but there seems to have been some sort of altercation that then escalated. we don t know if any suspects have been arrested. we are keeping a close eye on developments, as is our correspondent in washington, jessica parker. what more can you add to the story? as you say, we have not had many official details through yet, but what we do know looking at local media reports is that there appears to have been a shooting at around 10:30pm local time last night in dadeville, a small tow ....

hello. fighting has continued between the sudanese army and the paramilitary rapid support forces, with witnesses describing deafening explosions and intense gunfire in the capital khartoum. earlier, a three hour temporary humanitarian pause was meant to have allowed civilians to escape, but it s not clear how well it was observed. the world food programme halted its operations in sudan after three of its members were among nearly 70 people reported to have been killed. international efforts to end the fighting are ramping up with the head of the african union commission planning to go on a ceasefire mission and the presidents of kenya, south sudan and djibouti also trying to mediate. anne soy reports. this is what the sudanese woke up to yesterday. the sound of heavy artillery, gunfire and relentless fighting. a fragile political situation just got worse. translation: they are fighting over authority and looting of the country and the people, but we are here fighting ....
