SeaComm celebrates the grand opening of its new Essex location

A new credit union in town has officially opened its doors for the public.
After breaking ground on Carmichael Street in Essex last summer, SeaComm Federal Credit Union celebrated the construction’s completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 16 before welcoming in customers April 19.
It is the credit union’s eighth retail branch but just the second in Vermont – the other being in South Burlington – for the financial cooperative based out of Massena, N.Y.
“We are delighted to be a part of the greater Essex community and that our new location at 25 Carmichael Street will give us access to a highly visible, ever-expanded retail location,” said SeaComm President and Chief Executive Officer Scott A. Wilson. “The Town of Essex was very supportive of our new building project throughout the planning and construction phase. ....

Nanny State? Vermont Municipalities Want More Leeway to Make Their Own Rules

Marc Nadel

Winooski would need to update the document through a lengthy process that required both a town-wide vote and legislative approval. By the time the issue came up for a vote last November, the staffer had already left for another position where she could have access to that title, Baker told
Seven Days.
Voters did ultimately support making the numerous charter changes, including the administrative one. But the Onion City is one of 10 municipalities seeking to amend their local charters this legislative session and most are still waiting for state lawmakers stamp of approval. ....

Community Justice Update
One part of the Town of Colchester’s community justice efforts includes funding the Essex Community Justice Center (ECJC) in partnership with the Town of Essex and the State Department of Corrections. ECJC provides restorative justice programming with a focus on crime prevention, conflict resolution, and meeting the needs of those affected by crime. Different programs include Community Restorative Justice Panels, Community Dialogue education, and the Circle of Support and Accountability Program (COSA), which helps those recently released from incarceration to successfully re-enter society.
In their spring newsletter, ECJC noted the largest trend in the Community Restorative Justice Panels since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic is a 60% increase in the number of referrals from Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s office. They explain this increase is due to the Chittenden County State Attorney’s decisi ....

After Failed Merger Votes, Essex Junction Plans to Break From the Town of Essex

Rob Donnelly
They spent years trying to make it work. They even moved in together, so to speak, sharing staff and consolidating departments in hopes that it would confirm their compatibility. But some relationships aren t meant to be, and after a messy, century-plus entanglement, the Town of Essex and the Village of Essex Junction are heading toward a split.
The potential breakup of Vermont s second-largest community comes on the heels of two votes this spring in which residents were asked to merge their distinct but overlapping municipalities. Villagers, whose taxes would have dropped, voted overwhelmingly in favor, while town-outside-the-village residents, whose taxes would have increased, voted overwhelmingly against. Both times, the merger failed by fewer than 30 votes.  ....
