Mon May 17 2021 | Patrick Stevens | College PHOTO BY NAT LeDONNE / DUKE ATHLETICS Nakeie Montgomery (left) had one goal and one assist against High Point on Sunday, and JP Basile (right) had one goal. The Division I men’s quarterfinals are set. There are four teams from the ACC, two from the Big Ten and the Big East champion. And then there’s Loyola, riding a five-game winning streak and continuing its rise from oblivion after a fairly forgettable two months to begin the season. The Greyhounds’ 14-13 victory at Denver was how the eight-game opening weekend schedule ended, but it’s the right place to begin rewinding how the quarterfinals were set up. ....
Sat May 15 2021 | Nelson Rice | College PHOTO COURTESY OF JORDAN OZER/RUTGERS ATHLETICS (@JOZER7) Colin Kirst is interviewed on the field after making 17 saves in Rutgers 12-5 win Saturday over eighth-seeded Lehigh in Charlottesville, Va. While most of the focus was on Rutgers’ 17-year NCAA tournament drought when the Scarlet Knights’ name was called on Selection Sunday for the first time since 2004, the program’s most recent, and only, NCAA tournament victory dated back 14 more years. In 1990, Rutgers topped Virginia 7-6 in Charlottesville to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. Kyle Kirst was the Scarlet Knights’ goalie. Almost 31 years later to the day on the same campus, Colin Kirst starred in between the pipes at Klöckner Stadium and fulfilled his family’s legacy. The Big Ten Goalie of the Year made 17 saves, many of the spectacular variety, against his former team to lift Rutgers to a 12-5 first-round win Saturday over eighth-seeded L ....
Terry Foy (@TerenceFoy) Duke In my opinion, Lehigh, Denver and Georgetown are ineligible for this because the seeds don’t suggest a big enough upset. I’m so tempted to say Bryant vs. Virginia, a choice based on pedigree (remember Bryant’s win over ’Cuse in the Dome?) and the Bulldogs’ recent performance, but I think Virginia’s firepower is enough to dig them out of any hole, including being down four goals with 3:00 to play. I’m choosing the Blue Devils because I think it’s hard to get emotionally ready to play a team you beat 27-8. Keep in mind that the Panthers just inverted a 17-10 regular season loss to Richmond into an 11-8 SoCon final win. And don’t forget that Duke has a history of winning close in the first round, most recently escaping with a 12-11 win over the Spiders in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. ....
Inside Lacrosse Photo: James Beaver) Lehigh rebounded from last week’s loss to Villanova, stemmed a recent surge from Colgate and advanced to Sunday’s Patriot League championship game thanks to a 13-9 win over the Raiders at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday. The Mountain Hawks, who hosted the semifinals and final, will play the winner of Army-West Point vs. Loyola, the No. 1 seed in the North region and the No. 2 seed in the South region, respectively. Lehigh FOGO Mikey Sisselberger did what’s come to be expected: feeding his team the ball, winning 18-of-25 and picking up 14 groundballs. John Sidorski was the primary beneficiary of Sisselberger’s outing and the primary source of production for the Mountain Hawk offense, posting three goals and three assists. ....
Eight automatic qualifiers are up for grabs over the next week. With the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Tuesday night, there s no reason to turn away from your laptop or TV for the next six days with the amount of action on much of it staggered across the day so you ll be able to see most finishes. Here are our picks for conference champions a piece that s routinely become bulletin-board fodder on Championship Saturday. America East Terry Foy: UMBC I’m picking the Retrievers because of a combination of home-field advantage, conference tournament experience, close game experience and the idea that defense wins in May (which, in the shot clock era, I’m not even certain is true any longer). ....
