Stellantis has announced that it will cut as many as 2,465 jobs at its Detroit Assembly Complex-Mack and 1,225 jobs at the Toledo Assembly Complex, with the layoffs coming as early as February 5.
Workers from the United Auto Workers union, one of the largest organized labor institutions in North America, went on strike earlier this month in plants in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri amid a dispute with the Big Three automakers related to wages, a tiered retirement system, a lack of worker protections against plant closures, and other issues.
UAW President Shawn Fain made the announcement during a 10 p.m. Facebook Live presentation. His comments come near the end of a day of last-minute bargaining.
