'Not having food': Southland MP Joseph Mooney on childhood hardship and tragedy

Mooney appears less controversial, but whether by design in order to play the role of a safe pair of hands, or by dint of his shy personality, his low-key approach means it’s hard to work out what the electorate has got from Mooney thus far or what exactly it can expect from him in the future.

A year into the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 10,000 restaurants have closed permanently and that number is expected to rise into 2022 if government support does not continue. Although restaurant operators have relied more heavily on federal emergency wage subsidies and Canada Emergency Business Account loans than any other industry, “eight out of 10 restaurants still aren’t making money and six out of 10 are losing money,” says Restaurants Canada president Todd Barclay. “It makes sense for government to invest in an industry where 95 per cent of every dollar that is spent goes back into the local economy. This is an industry full of gritty, entrepreneurial people who are doing everything they can to survive.” ....

Ontario declares four-week stay-at-home order starting Thursday

Both announcements contributed to a chaotic moment in Canada’s pandemic, now in its third and worst wave. Variants of the virus that spread more efficiently than the sort that drove infections over the last year are powering the current spike in numbers, with most of the country still unvaccinated.
New concern also rose this week about whether the Atlantic provinces will be able to go ahead with their plan to recreate the “Atlantic bubble” starting April 19. Under that plan, designed to support tourism and the hospitality industry, regional travel would be freely allowed, even though travellers from outside are required to immediately isolate for two weeks. Medical officers of health are due to advise Atlantic premiers next week. ....
