$5,000 vet bill owed for rescued Diego Martin dogs

THE two abused dogs that were rescued from Diego Martin last week are now fondly called Jess and Jeremiah. And they still need help.
Last Thursday, police rescued the two dogs from St Lucien Road, Diego Martin, from an allegedly abusive owner. The malnourished dogs were behind a gate with signs saying “Keep away,” and “Stop feeding the dogs.
Residents claimed the dogs’ owner was not feeding them, as she said doing so would lead to “rats breeding on her property.”
Animal lovers made the issue go viral on social media and the police stepped in. ....

56-year-old Gaytrie Chanderpaul, of D?Abadie, died an hour after she was attacked by her pet Rottweiler at her home on Tuesday (19 January 2021) night.
A 56-year-old mother of two was mauled to death by her pet Rottweiler at her D’Abadie home on Tuesday night.
Gaytrie Chanderpaul was said to be giving her dog a treat at her Andrew Lane home when the animal attacked.
Guardian Media visited the family home but her daughter, Mandy, declined to speak.
A male relative said Chanderpaul’s two children were traumatised by the incident and preferred not to speak. Several small breed dogs were seen tied to trees in the family’s yard but there was no sign of the Rottweiler. The relative said police who visited the scene on Tuesday night said they would return on Wednesday for the dog but up until 5 pm, it was still at the family’s home. ....

US pet food available in Trinidad and Tobago recalled after 70-plus deaths

US company Midwestern Pet Foods has recalled five of its products after it caused the deaths of over 70 animals and illnesses in others.
On December 30, the company recalled its Sportmix products. In a release, it said this was “due to tests indicating levels of Aflatoxin that exceed acceptable limits.
It explained, “Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets. ....
