Kiwi killed by dog in North Taranaki


“It’s just so disappointing to see a large egg-carrying female taken out of the population,” Carson said
“In the wild, kiwi only have a 5 per cent chance of survival to adulthood. This big, beautiful female bird had beaten the odds and survived only to be taken out by a dog. It’s an entirely avoidable death.”
Dog owners are required to put their dogs through kiwi aversion training and get a permit before entering conservation land.
“If dog owners take their dogs through kiwi aversion training and keep their dogs under control the chances of this happening would be greatly reduced,” Carson said. ....

Caution Urged For Dog Owners As Lambing Season Begins

SPCA is urging dog owners, particularly those living near
lifestyle blocks, to take extra care and keep track of their
pets at all times, as early lambing season gets
underway.
Every year sheep and lambs are injured or
killed by roaming dogs in attacks that are not only
traumatic for animals and people involved, but are often
completely avoidable through responsible dog
ownership.
With 175,000 lifestyle blocks nationwide
and rural properties continuing to grow in popularity, SPCA

Auckland woman needed plastic surgery after being mauled by dog in reserve

Shea Lauty has been left with life-changing facial injuries after being attacked by a dog.
Lauty was saved by a passer-by who heard her screams, ran over, and kicked the dog until it let go.
By that time, it had sliced her lip open and punctured the skin on her face, neck and leg.
The owner fled in his car with his dogs, leaving a “torn to pieces” Lauty and Beau behind.

Shea Lauty had been walking around Captain Springs Reserve, near her workplace in Onehunga, when she was attacked.
Carr had been out of Auckland for work and was only made aware of the incident when a bloodied Lauty video-called him afterwards. ....
