Tiruppur MP K. Subbarayan wrote to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday suggesting that the State government must appoint Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in COVID-19 preventive measures to increase the number of healthcare workers. In the letter, he said that around 2,700 ASHA workers and their supervisors were currently present in the rural parts of the State, who could be appointed by the State government as nurses or in other positions as per their educational qualification on a permanent basis.
Mr. Subbarayan also urged improving the infrastructure and appointing additional personnel at the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital “on a war footing.” With COVID-19 cases rising in Tiruppur district, he said the Corporation must reach out to the residents in all 60 wards to prevent the further spread of the virus and to decongest the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. Tiruppur-based NGOs have come together to ready an oxygen bus in an attempt to ensure adequate oxygen supply to COVID-19 patients waiting for hospitalisation.
Young Indians Tiruppur, Sakthi Nursing Home, Tiruppur Riders Club and S.N.S School have jointly readied the bus which could house five patients at a time. According to M. Padmanabhan, a member of Young Indians Tiruppur, the bus is likely to be operational from Friday upon receiving permission from the district administration and it would be dedicated to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. ....

A man, who allegedly stole the car of a traffic police, suffered injuries as the vehicle met with an accident near Uthukuli on Tuesday.
Police sources said that S. Vijay (23) from Tiruvannamalai, who was working as a private car driver here, allegedly entered the sport utility vehicle (SUV) parked near the Tiruppur Corporation headquarters on Mangalam Road at around 1.45 p.m. With the vehicle key still inside the car, he drove off from the spot and headed towards Uthukuli. He was allegedly in an inebriated state, police sources claimed. ....

A group of 16 migrant workers from Jharkhand, who were employed in a private spinning mill in Vellakoil and tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in April, have allegedly left for their hometowns a day before their 14-day quarantine period ended.
According to sources in the Health Department, the 16 men aged between 19 and 27 tested positive on April 6 and were admitted to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital.
Upon their discharge after a week, the workers were asked to quarantine themselves for one more week till Tuesday.
However, the mill authorities allegedly allowed the 16 migrant workers to be a part of a batch of 40 workers who left for Jharkhand in a bus on Monday, the sources said. ....
