48kg ganja seized, two men arrested | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Narcotics control bureau-CID arrested two people for smuggling 48kg of ganja on Monday. NIB-CID deputy superintendent H Manoharan and team had intercepted a car on Palladam – Tirupur Road on Monday around 9am after receiving a tip-off. They found bundles of ganja worth Rs 4.8 lakh and arrested S Alex, 33, of Annamalai Garden on Mangalam Road in Eduvai in Tirupur district and K Selvam, 41, of Devaram in Theni district. “Alex and Selvam are facing ganja cases in Theni, Tirupur and other districts. They bought the contraband from Visakhapatnam and smuggled it to Theni a week ago. They were planning to distribute it among sellers in Tirupur city,” a police officer said.

Deputy commissioner of police R Mutharasu said 190 traffic cops were deployed in the city between 6am and 10pm. “Traffic police registered 2,400 cases for not wearing helmets and not possessing valid documents. Most of the motorists were booked under Section 179 (disobedience of orders, obstruction and refusal of information) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. As many as 18 motorcycles were seized from people who were roaming without any reason,” he said.

Coimbatore: A 23-year-old drunk man drove away the Tirupur city (south) traffic police inspector’s vehicle that was parked on Mangalam Road with the key in it and hit a truck on Tuesday afternoon. A police officer said the accused - S Vijay, of Chengam in Thiruvannamalai district - had fractured his right shoulder in the incident and was undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Tirupur. His condition is said to be stable. The officer said the vehicle was parked near the Tirupur city municipal corporation office. “Its driver Rajaguru, who is attached to the Tirupur city armed reserve police, had left the key inside the vehicle. Vijay, who came there in an inebriated state, saw the vehicle with the key in it and drove that away without grabbing the attention of policemen in the locality.”
