Prairie View A&M University golf coach Kevin Jennings has an expansive history with what is now the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship. He played in the event when it was the National Minority College Championship while he still was a high school student, competed as a college player and coached Talladega College to a title in what was then the NAIA Division for smaller schools.

Howard University is only 13 months into restarting its men’s golf program, and coach Sam Puryear has to remind himself to be abundantly patient. Golf programs are not built in a day, and the team showed up to this week’s PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass still getting to know one another, having been on campus together for only 10 weeks.
Adding to the challenge, it had been so chilly in the nation’s capital that the Bison had been practicing in ski caps up until last week. But Howard, restarted largely because of the generosity of NBA All-Star Steph Curry, who committed to financially back the team for six years, and Puryear had some early signs that their first round might be special.

Scooter Clark views the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship as something much bigger than a golf tournament. For Clark and many others, the event represents an opportunity to promote greater diversity in golf, and to help to gain more inclusion across the golf industry.
Clark would know. He played in the first National Minority College Championship in 1987 when he still was in high school, played in it twice more as a college player, coached his team to victory in the event, and now runs it as director of the Championship.
