Local health districts, state lawmakers try to speed up vaccine rollout and last updated 2021-02-02 16:14:49-05 PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Portsmouth ranks last among the seven cities of Hampton Roads when it comes to vaccinating people. Just under 4,000 people have been vaccinated so far, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health. That s a rate of 4,189 per 100,000 people. By comparison, Virginia Beach has vaccinated more than 36,000 people at a rate of 8,165 per 100,000 people. The Portsmouth Health District was unavailable to do an interview Tuesday and staff didn t respond to further questions about what s being done to bridge the gap. ....

The Hampton and Peninsula Health District on Friday will begin Phase 1b of its vaccination rollout for frontline workers and people who are 75 or older or live in congregate settings. Next week, the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Western Tidewater health districts will also start Phase 1b for frontline essential workers like grocery store and public transit employees anyone 65 or older and people between 16 and 64 years old with high-risk medical conditions. Virginia Beach officials say residents in the 1b group can begin pre-registering on Monday to receive vaccines through a new online portal. Norfolk residents can pre-register here. ....

Based on the Virginia Department of Healthâs COVID-19 vaccination plan, Phase 1B includes frontline essential workers, people 65 years of age and older, and people between the ages of 18 and 64 who have a high-risk medical condition.
