Survey shows many Louisiana residents hesitant to get COVID-19 vaccine

Michael Tortorich Recent survey data shows many Louisiana residents would not accept a COVID-19 vaccine if made available to them. Carnegie Mellon University’s Delphi Lab gathered the survey data via Facebook. The figures reflect how people feel about receiving vaccinations by state and county, or county-equivalent in Louisiana’s case. Respondents were asked if they would definitely or probably choose to get vaccinated if offered immediately. Several Louisiana parishes ranked among the lowest in the country, with Terrebonne recording the lowest figure at 48 percent. For Ascension Parish, the percentage was 60.2. The highest was Arlington County, Virginia, which had 92 percent.

Local health districts in Northern Virginia have seen more people requesting appointments than available doses. For instance, the Fairfax Health District reports over 156,000 residents have preregistered and are eligible in phases 1a and 1b. The health department anticipates it could take months to get appointments for everyone on the wait list if vaccine supply doesn t increase. The Virginia Department of Health has also changed to a population-based allocation to health districts, which the Fairfax County Health Department says could keep the pace of incoming doses the same until March.

Published: 21 January 2021 More people across Hampton Roads will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting this week, officials say. The Hampton and Peninsula Health District on Friday will begin Phase 1b of its vaccination rollout for frontline workers and people who are 75 or older or live in congregate settings.  Next week, the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Western Tidewater health districts will also start Phase 1b for frontline essential workers like grocery store and public transit employees anyone 65 or older and people between 16 and 64 years old with high-risk medical conditions.  Virginia Beach officials say residents in the 1b group can begin pre-registering on Monday to receive vaccines through a new online portal. Norfolk residents can pre-register here.
