Intel Collaborates with Microsoft against Cryptojacking Microsoft Defender for Endpoint expands its use of Intel® Threat Detection Technology (Intel® TDT) beyond accelerated memory scanning capabilities to activate central processing unit (CPU) based cryptomining machine learning (ML) detection. This move further accelerates endpoint detection and response for millions of customers without compromising experience. “This is a true inflection point for the security industry as well as our SMB, mid-market and enterprise customers that have rapidly adopted Windows 10 with built-in endpoint protections. Customers who choose Intel vPro® with the exclusive Intel® Hardware Shield now gain full-stack visibility to detect threats out of the box with no need for IT configuration. The scale of this CPU-based threat detection rollout across customer systems is unmatched and helps close gaps in corporate defenses, ....
The fervor of cryptocoin mining has consumed a large part of the semiconductor industry of late. The demands for high performance silicon to mine these virtual assets with value is one factor in a global shortage of available parts for computers, automobiles, defense, research, and other industries. One consistent element to cryptocoin mining over the last decade is the prevalence of hijacked machines and devices through malware, commonly known as botnets. Previously these armies of machines were co-opted to perform bandwidth attacks against various targets, but they have also been used for their compute resources – mining coins that have value for those that control the botnet. This week Intel and Microsoft are announcing an additional layer of protection against these sorts of attacks. ....

Apr 26, 2021 11:00 EDT with 0 comments Cryptocurrencies are dominating the headlines once again for various reasons, including retailers offering support for payment methods based on the technology. This increase in public interest in cryptocurrency also opens a new avenue, namely cryptojacking, for malicious actors. Today, Microsoft and Intel have jointly announced new capabilities in Microsoft Defender to detect cryptomining using the latter s Threat Detection Technology (TDT). For those unaware, cryptojacking is a malicious practice in which attackers install malware on host devices, which then either uses the computer s resources to mine for cryptocurrencies - resulting in a performance hit - or steals cryptocurrency wallets. In some cases, this malware also acts as a worm and spreads to other endpoints on the network. ....
