You are looking at some of the images from the 1884 president ial election and listening to songs in support of the republican candidate, james g. Blaine. We are live from the blaine house. We are here with the sitting governor. This house is filled with blaine memorabilia. Do you have a sense of the man while you are here . Absolutely. Welcome to the house. Mr. Blaine is here every day and we hear his spirit every evening. The house was built many years ago. And what have you come to learn about the man by living in his house . He not only was a very strong supporter and founder of the Republican Party in maine, but also a National Leader and he started maine on its course to where we are now. He was very influential in the State Government and federal government. He was a powerhouse. A big tank powerhouse on a massive scale. A bigtime power house. I am very honored to be a stored of the house. You probably have the best commute in america because this is right across the street from
Professor green absolutely, i agree. And what is interesting about that statement, it was made at the time when speakers had a lot fewer responsibilities and duties than today. If anything, it is even more so it is the most difficult job in washington. Susan unlike the senate majority, this position is named in the constitution, without a lot of detail beyond that. I am wondering, when the framers created the position, they were look into the english model, what are they have in mind . Professor green they were thing about a model of the speakership where it was a position that had parliamentary responsibilities. So the job was to preside over the chamber and make sure the rules were being followed fairly. But they also understood the position could take on other responsibilities. Well get started. Good morning, everyone ip im elizabeth slattery, legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation and this is a panel on the past Supreme Court term. So the Supreme Courts next oh, im sorry. The top one . Okay, there we go. The Supreme Courts next term starts . Just a few weeks but were here to reflect on the past term. I submit that the october term 2018 will more likely be remembered for Justice Brett kavanaughs confirmation hearings than for any particular case the court decided, and its too early to make sweeping statements about the impact of president Donald Trumps nominees to the court, though the rapid destruction of america, their opponents foresaw has yet to occur. Justices Brett Kavanaugh and neil gorsuch have however lived up to the chief justices declaration that we do not have obama judges or trump judges, bush judges or clinton judges. Like their predecessors, kavanaugh and gorsuch are their own men at times bucking expectations of how a trump judge will vote. T
