Brockton man charged with hate crime on Tauntonian held as dangerous

TAUNTON   A 34-year-old Brockton man who allegedly entered onto a Taunton couple s property and violently assaulted one of them in what is alleged to be a hate crime, was deemed dangerous and ordered held without bail at a Fall River Superior Court dangerousness hearing. Michael Cates Jr. was indicted in November 2020 by a grand jury on charges of a civil rights violation, assault and battery to intimidate with injury and aggravated assault and battery. Cates was also indicted on a charge of assault and battery on a fellow inmate at the Bristol County House of Corrections that allegedly occurred in August 2020 while he was being held in relation to the hate crime charge.

Brockton Man Accused of Hate Crime Deemed Dangerous A 34-year-old Brockton man who allegedly entered onto a Taunton couple s property and violently assaulted one of them in what is alleged to be a hate crime was deemed dangerous and ordered held without bail after a Superior Court Dangerousness Hearing was held earlier this month, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced. Michael Cates was indicted in November 2020 by the grand jury on charges of civil rights violation, assault and battery to intimidate with injury and aggravated assault and battery. He was also indicted for an assault and battery on a fellow inmate at the Bristol County House of Corrections. The jail assault occurred in August 2020, while the defendant was being held in relation to the alleged Taunton hate crime.

Massachusetts man, accused of punching gay man and yelling homophobic slur at him in alleged hate crime, ordered held without bail, DA says Updated Feb 23, 2021; A Massachusetts man accused of punching a gay man last year and yelling homophobic slurs at him outside his home in an alleged hate crime was ordered to be held in prison without bail earlier this month, according to prosecutors announced Tuesday. Michael Cates was arrested in July 2020 and indicted by a Bristol Superior Court jury in November over accusations he walked onto a couple’s property in Taunton last summer and violently assaulted one of the men, according to a statement from Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III’s office.
