Report reveals Msunduzi Municipality staff, councillors owe millions for services as the city grapples with ballooning debt

DURBAN - STAFF members in the Msunduzi Municipality owe the council more than R4 million.
The staff, including councillors and the employees of the municipality, owe a combined R4.4 million for rates and services.
A confidential report on the matter, which was tabled before a full council recently, shows that the officials are in debt to the municipality to the tune of R4.1 million and councillors owe about R290 000.
In November, the council deducted more than R1 million from the salaries of these employees and about R40 000 from councillors for the debt. ....

DURBAN - PLANS by the Msunduzi Municipality to increase revenue collection by offering some relief to indebted customers has come under fire as the city faced accusations of rewarding defaulters.
In terms of the plan, indebted customers could get a 30% discount on their debts provided they met the conditions set by the municipality.
The initiative, termed “Covid-19 relief”, is part of the municipality’s revenue-enhancement strategy.
The municipality desperately needs to raise cash to rein in consumer debt that has ballooned to close to R5 billion and is growing. It also needs to fund maintenance and repairs of infrastructure. Its electricity infrastructure has become unreliable, leading to outages that are threatening the city’s economy. ....

DURBAN - THE troubled Msunduzi Municipalityâs call centre received a donation of new equipment to make it easy for staff to process customer complaints.
The call centre is a great source of frustration for residents of the provincial capital city, who often complain that they cannot get through to the call centre to report service delivery faults.
The municipality said it had received a systems upgrade and tablets which had been donated by Safe City and Televoip on Monday morning.
While the donation was only publicly announced this week, it is understood that the equipment was delivered in February and was already being used by city staff. ....
