Durban - THERE has been mixed reactions to the Msunduzi Municipalityâs executive committeeâs (Exco) decision to utilise convicted prisoners to clean up the city.
Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha confirmed media reports that councillors approved an agreement last week between the municipality and the Department of Correctional Services for inmates to be responsible for street cleaning, grass cutting in parks and cemeteries, the painting of municipal owned buildings, including servicing of the municipalityâs fleet. The matter is still to be approved at the cityâs full council meeting. ....

Durban - Former Msunduzi city manager Sizwe Hadebe has been accused of trying to defraud the municipality out of almost R200 000.
A forensic report before the municipality’s council says Hadebe had falsely claimed he had not taken his leave days and had attempted to claim the cash value of the days which was R199 000.
But Hadebe fired back saying the days he claimed for were legitimate days of leave that were owed to him.
The alleged attempted fraud took place when Hadebe moved from being on a contract to a permanent position in 2017. ....

Durban - The number of suspected âghost employeesâ in the Msunduzi Municipality is now down to just 13.
Exco members were informed during a meeting on Thursday that more employees had presented themselves for verification over the past few days, and there were now just 13 employees who still needed to be verified.
This is down from 121 two weeks ago.
The municipality is doing a headcount of all its staff members to determine if all staff are present and accounted for.
Two weeks ago, the administrator, Scelo Duma, said he had given a directive to freeze the salaries of 121 individuals because they had failed to present themselves for the headcount despite being given several opportunities to do so. ....
