About what exactly is happening in the capital of tripoli. jon: nearly a week into the campaign to stop ghadafi s forces from attacking civilians, our nato allies are beginning to shoulder a bigger share of the air assault on libya. defense secretary robert gates saying president obama made it clear the u.s. would only run the operation for a short time. meanwhile, we expect an update from the defense department a little bit later this afternoon. jennifer griffin live at the pentagon for us now. the french military shot down this libyan plane, jennifer? what can you tell us about that? reporter: we have new details about that. it was a french fighter jet that did destroy a libyan plane. the libyan plane, however, is a military training plane, it is a g-2, we re told. and it is not clear at this time whether that plane was landing or whether it was on the ground. the details are still a bit murky and are just coming out, so it s not clear whether that plane was in violation of the ....
Los angeles times reporter joins us live on the phone from tripoli. what s the latest there? reporter: it s been a relatively quiet day here in the capital today. earlier this morning just before dawn we just heard some massive explosions and some just intense barrages of anti-aircraft fire, tracer fire in the sky. then today they are, basically, they re having a funeral right now, a mass funeral for people who supposedly died in the coalition air strikes. they say that civilians have died in those air strikes. myself and a bunch of other journalists attempted to go to a hospital where these civilians were killed and were taken, and we weren t allowed to. we were, basically, detained on the street and held for 90 minutes. so an attempt to independently verify the government s claim that civilians have been killed failed. jon: and i suppose, i mean, ....
Call 877-242-usaa. jon: a fox news alert about this new crisis developing in japan, this time in tokyo where fears of radiation contamination from the crippled nuclear plant are now causing folks to hoard food and water. many shelves are empty of basic necessities. no milk, rice, water or toilet paper. meanwhile, two workers trying to ....
With you about how those people died? reporter: i would let the viewers decide that. but, you know, also they say there s been civilian damage to infrastructure. we said, okay, let s go see it. they take us to a port. it s a military port filled with military equipment, filled with anti-aircraft fire. it looked like a legitimate target to me if you re enforcing a no-fly zone. and then we asked, well, how many soldiers died here, how many military persian mel? how many civilians? and they said, thank god, no one died here. to me, i couldn t have thought of a more clean hit on a military target where none of the, you know, ordinary soldiers or civilians who are working there are killed, but the equipment itself is damaged. jon: did i get your name wrong? reporter: you know, it doesn t matter. borzoo is pert. jon: you re risking your life, at least i can pronounce your name correctly. ....
It happened at reagan airport, right? unbelievably this was the second time it happened in two years. apparently it happened once before when a guy stepped out of the control tower, we believe they he forgot to bring his magnetic pass card with him, door was locked, he couldn t get in. they made mention of this on the air traffic recording. listen up. is there a reason it s not manned? i m going to take a guess and say that the controller got locked out. i ve heard of this happening before. first time i ve heard it. reporter: again, there are procedures in place, jon, as you know, for these kinds of events, an uncontrolled approach, they re trained to do it, but the risk is there s a lot going on on the ground at night, there s not a lot of air traffic, a lot of planes being repositioned, vehicular traffic. it poses a very dangerous situation. jon: deg mckelway at reagan international airport, thank you. jenna: some with the scare ....
