"Shedding off-the-grid: The role of garment manufacturing and textile c" by Thomas Stanton, Elyse Stanes et al.

Textile fibres are abundant anthropogenic pollutants. These fibres enter aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments, and biota. Textile fibres pose biological and chemical threats to the environments they pollute. Laundry is a primary source of synthetic and natural textile fibres. Fibre shed from laundry performed in electric washing machines is well characterised. However, over 50% of the global population does not have regular access to an electric washing machine. Without regular access to an electric washing machine, people launder ‘off-the-grid’ with locally specific methods. Their variable laundry methods present a significant challenge to quantifying microfibre shed. This study makes an original contribution to studies of fibre shedding. First, it details laundry protocols in a Global South community. Second, it assesses how textile structure influences fibre shedding independent of laundry practices. To do this, we deploy a hand laundry protocol learned during ethn ....

University of Technology Sydney fast-tracks climate action with world-first, algae-analysing robot

SYDNEY, July 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ The "Algae Phenotyping System" finds climate-combatting "super algae" at the speed of 20 scientists working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Photo by Marcus Stimson. UTS researchers in the Climate Change Cluster (C3) have partnered with PSI - the world-leading manufacturer for biological sciences instruments - to develop and install an automated robotic system that screens thousands of types of algae each day. Algae are microscopic aquatic plants that, when grown in a bioreactor, soak up carbon from the atmosphere up to 40 times more efficiently than trees. With the right traits, these algae can then be used in industries such as food and beverage, textile fibre, bioplastics and biofuel. "Our collaboration with PSI.is a game changer in the pursuit of using 'super algae' to combat climate change, and will create a new algal biotech industry here in Australia," says Distinguished Professor Peter Ralph, Director ....
