Keep Terrebonne Beautiful s new project targets drinking straws

Keep Terrebonne Beautiful has started a project to reduce the number of plastic straws heading to landfills. The nonprofit group is collaborating with bars and restaurants and encouraging them not to give out straws right away and instead wait for customers to ask. “This is a preventative way to keep straws out of the trash,” said Amanda Gibson, a group member who has helped spearhead the initiative. “It helps restaurants save money in the long run, and it also gets people thinking of small ways to reduce trash.” Gibson, a Houma-area nutritionist, said she got the idea after seeing it work in other parts of the country.

Live music is back in some outdoor spaces in Terrebonne and Lafourche

One of the casualties of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has been the silencing of live music in the Houma-Thibodaux area, just as in most of the state and nation. Despite restrictions that limit crowds at local music venues, some have been able to host live acts again. Those who provide that entertainment have had to endure long stretches off the stage and get creative to replace lost income. Casie Thibodeaux, half of the popular husband-and-wife acoustic duo Casie and Jonny, was able to find a niche performing on Facebook Live using online payment tool Venmo to allow viewers to pay whatever they want.
