Desai met with an accident when he was a morning walk near Iscon Ambli road near his residence. He ran away after being chased by a few stray dogs. He, however, fell down and suffered a severe head injury, which led to a brain hemorrhage.

Desai was also involved in sustainability projects and had interests in travel and wildlife.
