Athens Hip-Hop History: Party pioneer and recording artist "Tony B"

When people think of entrepreneur, promoter and recording artist Tony B, the term “shy theatre kid” doesn’t quite spring to mind. But that’s exactly who Antonio Bradford was in the beginning of his creative journey, and in some ways, still is.
Born in 1982 and raised in Athens since the age of 1, Bradford spent his youth dreaming of becoming an actor. He took theatre classes at Clarke Central High School, and continued to pursue his craft at Augusta’s Paine College after graduation.
It was there Bradford discovered something else he was good at, and would prove to be the jumping off point for his future career. ....

Athens hip-hop history: DJ Sean Swift still in the mix after 40 years

Anyone who wants to learn the art of turntablism can watch a YouTube video or post for tips and instructions on social media. But in the early days of hip-hop, all of the observation and experimentation hinged on the willingness of others to teach what they knew.
For DJ Sean Swift, growing up in Athens was essential to his passion and education.
Swift, born Sean Lindsey in 1971 and raised in the Stonehenge subdivision of Athens, described himself as “the low-key guy” who grew up in the same neighborhood as local scene pioneers like Cedric “Amun-Ra” Huff and Willie Wester. At the time, hip-hop in the Classic City was pure b-boying,” a style of performance art commonly known as breakdancing, and Lindsey took extensive notes on the moves and  dress codes” of the era.  ....

How Athens breaker Willie Wester pioneered local hip-hop culture

In order to gain a better understanding of the origins of hip-hop culture in Athens, you have to know someone who was there. Or know someone who knows someone who was there. The lives these individuals lived, and the stories they have to tell, aren t going to be easy to find on Google or even at the local library.
Willie Wester is one of those who was there, and his personal account of how hip-hop made its way into his life, and ultimately saved it, is the stuff of great autobiographies and feature films.
Born in Hempstead, N.C., in 1969, Wester s family moved to Gainesville, Ga., when he was 6 years old before settling in Athens when he was in the seventh grade. It was then, as a student at Clarke Middle School, that Wester s lifelong love of hip hop began. ....

Athens hip-hop icon Elite Tha Showstoppa is working on first album

Seated at the console of his home recording studio in Winder, Darrin Ellison queues up a pair of tracks he’s been working on lately, one of which was left open from the previous night.
One is a hard-edged hip-hop banger that would get club-goers jumping, the other a hook-heavy love song that sounds like it could go right into radio rotation.
Both are among the 500 songs Ellison, better known by his stage name “Elite Tha Showstoppa,” has amassed over the years that remain unreleased. Ellison says that could soon change.
“I’ve never released an album,” said Ellison. “That’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and it’s one of my primary goals now.” ....
