Study demonstrates that the main creators of SARS-CoV-2 mutations are vaccine-suppressed

Study demonstrates that the main creators of SARS-CoV-2 mutations are vaccine-suppressed
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to wreak its havoc the world over, seemingly remaining one step ahead of scientists. With the rollout of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, the focus shifted to making vaccines available in the vast quantities required for the global immunization effort.
However, the emergence of multiple antibody-resistant mutants has cast doubts on the success of this strategy. Especially concerning are the three variants of concern (VOCs), namely, B.1.1.7 (20I/501Y.V1), B.1.351 (20H/501Y.V2), and P1 (20J/501Y.V3).

Long-term steroid treatment may not be necessary for kidney transplant patients

Long-term steroid treatment may not be necessary for kidney transplant patients
Long-term use of a medication used to treat kidney transplant patients may not be necessary in individuals with low-to-moderate risk of organ rejection, according to the results of a study led by a University of Cincinnati transplant researcher.
The randomized clinical trial of 385 patients on immunosuppressive drugs tacrolimus and mycophenolate examined whether use of these medicines called corticosteroids could be eliminated at seven days after kidney transplantation.
The study shows that 15 years after transplantation no difference in kidney transplant survival or patient survival rates were found between patients who received long-term corticosteroids versus those who had corticosteroid eliminated early, explains E. Steve Woodle, MD, the William A. Altemeier Endowed Chair and Professor of Surgery in the UC College of Medicine, and leader of the study. ....

Researchers design armored immune cells to attack recurring cancer in liver transplant patients

Researchers design armored immune cells to attack recurring cancer in liver transplant patients
Duke-NUS Medical School researchers, together with collaborators in Singapore, have designed armored immune cells that can attack recurring cancer in liver transplant patients, while temporarily evading immunosuppressant drugs patients take to avoid organ rejection. The findings were published in the journal
Hepatology.
Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of primary liver cancer and the sixth most common cancer worldwide. It often develops in people with chronic liver disease following hepatitis B infection.
A common treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma is to completely remove the liver and replace it with a healthy one from a donor. However, hepatitis B-related hepatocellular carcinoma can recur in some patients following transplantation. To kill the cancer, doctors can inject immune cells, called T cells, which are specially designed to target hepatitis ....
