History and now there s a new battle brewing over the hallowed grounds of gettysburg. plans to build a casino resort at the doorstep of america s bloodiest battleground. on one side, those who say it would trample on the heritage and history of the civil war and of america itself. on the others, supporters who say it could actually wind up creating a lot of jobs for an area that needs them. this morning, we are joined by brendan sinneman, the president of the gettysburg battlefield association. he supports the plan and susan paddock is the chair of no casino gettysburg. thanks for joining us. i d like to first thank you for saying that having us on here. you bet. and if i can start by saying that i appreciate the national attention that this issue has gained as of recent. however, there are much more hallowed spots that are endangered on the gettysburg ....
Battlefield. this, there s no casino to be built on the gettysburg battlefield. there are endangered battlefield sites such as the camp letterman project that s in imminent danger of construction as well as several other sites on historic actions that spots that battle took place. brendan, apparently this is so close to and there is some worry that, perhaps, some soldiers were actually buried in that area where they would do the casino. the the veterans or rather the national legion has called the suggestion to build this there a national disgrace. sure. the national chapter has come out to our local chapter that s located on the battlefield itself has come out against the national chapter and in regard to the proposed site of a renovation of an existing commercial facility being located on the battlefield, even the national parks service has stated that it s not a significant part of the battle. all right. susan, why is this a terrible idea to have a casino within 1/2 ....
Mile of such hallowed ground? you know, gettysburg had 51,000 casualties in three days of the most important battle in american history on american soil. and those american heroes on both sides fought for the meaning of our country. civil war was a terrible thing. hopefully it never, ever, ever would happen again. but how many years have to pass before it s ok to say 1/2 mile away and there was action there, the gettysburg national military park does not encompass the entire battlefield. now, one of the arguments, though, susan, for building it is that it would create a lot of jobs in an area that needs them. you know, we have had almost ....
