Gold Key – Lobby Midscale
The Highlights: The biggest challenge of renovating an 1897 property? Preserving the hotel’s unique architectural details and valuable building materials but that means some heavy lifting. The owner decided to restore a 38,000-square-foot portion of the original building (the lobby), an  effort that involved rotating the 1,750-ton hotel 90 degrees and relocating it 230 feet using a computer-steered process. Remaining sections were deconstructed piece by piece to salvage wood, doors, doorknobs, windows, Tiffany glass, and bricks, which were repurposed into the team’s revised design plan. The resulting goal: to incorporate as much of these original elements in the new design while layering in modern touches. ....

Mauna Lani | Boutique Design

Gold Key – Lobby Luxury
The Highlights: Designers faced two challenges at this beloved resort. First, how to tackle the massive renovation? Second, what’s the best way to spotlight and embrace local culture to create an authentic and contemporary experience? The answer: Give it some soul. At the heart of the public space is a loggia around which the program unfolds. There, a centuries-old canoe, a remnant of the property’s previous life, highlights the base of the central stair. In the multistory atrium, the design team crafted a central hale structure, added murals by local artists, and created seating zones to control circulation. ....

Rosewood Little Dix Bay | Boutique Design

Gold Key – Resort
The Highlights: Following a four-year renovation (and Hurricane Irma), this Caribbean resort’s design is inspired by the laidback lifestyle and nautical qualities of its home in the British Virgin Islands and celebrates roots dating back to the 1960s. Then considered a leading example of ecotourism, the newly constructed resort stays true to the original property’s vision of “earth in balance,” with its footprint and structures remaining the same as when they first emerged. At the same time, the place’s essential character is omnipresent through the inventive use of local materials, distinctive color schemes, authentic artifacts, and dynamic elements that bring the external atmosphere indoors. ....

The Kindler Hotel | Boutique Design

Gold Key – Lobby Upper Midscale
The Highlights: The first boutique luxury hotel located in Nebraska’s capital, the Kindler features 45 guestrooms and a showstopping lobby complete with works by namesake Nebraskan artist and the owner’s father-in-law, Ken Kindler, as well as custom furniture by designer Ross Vincent.
Vincent incorporated the structure’s Art Deco architecture with modern design, creating a movement he calls “Modern Deco” with craftsmanship, rich details, bold geometry, and modern silhouettes elevating the hotel’s aesthetic. Upon entering, you can smell a custom scent that’s carried through the lobby air, while a massive LED screen behind the reception displays a video of a calming waterfall, and a walk-in wine cellar and water vapor “fireplace” divides the bar and dining room. ....
