Serious stripers have now invaded Massbay with talk now turning to taping fish in excess of 40”! Flounder fortunes remain positive while the hot haddock fishing continues unabated. Speaking of hot, the early season surge in temperatures is already bringing some southern visitors to our realm.
Massachusetts South/Boston Fishing Report
While not exact, generally breeder-size stripers that wind up as resident fish from the South Shore through Boston travel through the canal. North Shore through Cape Ann fish, however, are often inclined to migrate offshore and around the cape. For the time being, anglers fishing for bigs up north seem to be doing better than their South Shore/Boston counterparts as I’m hearing of fish up to the mid-40” range! Questions answered at Acadia Aqua Farm scoping session
BAR HARBOR Where do baby scallops come from? Why is a light necessary to mark buoys? Will the farmed scallops increase the local wild scallop population? These were some of the questions fielded by owners of Acadia Aqua Farms during a scoping session on Friday.
One of Maine’s largest mussel farming operations, the company has submitted an application for a 20-year lease on a 68-acre suspended gear operation for farming scallops in Frenchman Bay. It is located 4,000 feet from shore and 2,700 feet northeast of Sunken Ledge.
About 25 people attended the scoping session that took place via the video conferencing platform Zoom. Those in attendance included shoreline neighbors, an Acadia National Park representative and others interested in learning more about the proposed aquaculture farm.

Mussel farmers intend to diversify with scallop farm
BAR HARBOR – With one aquaculture lease application still in limbo due to the pandemic, Acadia Aqua Farms has submitted a second application to the Maine Department of Resources for a 68-acre site in Frenchman Bay.
The company proposes a suspended gear operation for farming scallops 4,000 feet from shore and 2,700 feet northeast of Sunken Ledge. A scoping session is scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 29 via Zoom.
A scoping session is a meeting where applicants explain their tentative proposals to members of the public, who can provide feedback prior to submission of a final application. Once a final application is submitted, a public hearing is scheduled.
