A Mahapanchayat was organised in Haryana's Gurugram district for the release of youths arrested in connection with the killing of a Muslim cleric on August 1. The panchayat also demanded the removal of the Anjuman mosque from a Hindu-dominated area.
Hundreds of people in Gurugram gathered in violation of prohibitory orders and called for an economic and social boycott of Muslims following recent communal violence. The villagers claimed that the men named in the mosque attack were innocent and issued an ultimatum for the names to be dropped. They threatened to hold roadblocks across the city if their demands were not met. The district administration said it did not give permission for the gathering and had imposed prohibitory orders, but hundreds still attended the event. The police are considering whether the speeches made at the gathering constitute hate speech.
