About being a librarian in congress. I can remember that because i was surprised, i had been advising and consulting because this was an opportunity for the Library Community to weigh in basically on what would be needed for the library of Congress Going into the next few decades so my name was put forward as a person that i should talk to and that went on for a little while and then i was asked, would you consider being considered for the position yourself and it took me back a little bit and i had to think about what i was currently doing, really publicservice innercity that the state had the Public Library be the state library of baltimore and maryland, this was a very unique situation and i had become a Baltimore Ian and was really working on the issues and i had to think, how can i go from serving the community to serving a country. And what contribution could i make. Why did you say yes . Because when i really thought about the treasures and what is contained in the library of co
It as the potential to support more than 55,000 jobs in our state and contribute more than 53 billion in revenue. I urge my colleagues to support this amendment and at this time i would yield to the chairman. Mr. Calvert im not going to oppose your amendment. I certainly appreciate what youre trying to accomplish and generally agree that this administration has placed way too many restrictions on drilling both on shore and offshore. These restrictions have delayed the permitting process slowed Economic Growth in your state and many other states around the union, various groups have used that to their advantage, so i agree that more certainly certainty is needed in the leasing and permitting process. What im afraid of is that this might lead to a precedent for preempting the department of interiors Decision Making authority under any president and may lead to other amendments and kind of opening pandoras box of members doing specific amendments that are off their particular states. Should get together with each other and say what do we want and then make it known and then illustrate by your example that you can have a home life and work life. One of my former had three young children, a day schedule. There happy with her work. She has a whole library of work at her fingertips at home. It should be much easier to have a balanced life that once was, but dont be shy about speaking up. Have company when you do so so you are not a lone voice. Thank you. [applause] thank you very much. And and so, basically, this group i sued and said youre discriminating against us. Were not able to offer our message because of the Bipartisan Campaign reform act. Now, the court ruled in their favor by a 54 decision. And it was a very close decision and, obviously, hugely controversial. But one of the things that the justices in the majority said is that you cant discriminate against the viewpoint of a Nonprofit Corporation in this sense, you cant reticket them from getting restrict them from getting their message out.
