The Day - New Expressiones exhibition opens in La Grua Center - News from southeastern Connecticut

Fantastic Souls, Surreal World, the latest exhibition of artwork from the Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, opens Wednesday in Stonington s La Grua Center.
To kick off the show, contributing artists Juan Belanguer (Argentina), Juan Carlos Fernandez (Honduras), Michelle Melo (Columbia), and Guido Garaychochea (Peru) will participate in a virtual chat at 5 p.m. today.
The exhibition will be on display at the center through April, and there is also a virtual gallery of works by other artists who can t travel to the U.S. due to COVID restrictions.
Expressiones is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality artistic programming aimed at bridging the cultural gap between diverse communities in the area with a focus on Latino and Hispanic culture. ....

The Arts from Afar: Pandemic inspired innovation in the arts world in 2020


The pandemic turned everything upside down in 2020, including some of the things we usually rely on to help us through dark times — like the arts.
When it became clear that the novel coronavirus was going to stick around for a while, arts leaders from Westerly to Mystic to Providence and in between began to look anew at the programs they had planned to present in 2020, most of which were canceled when pandemic protocols forced limits on large indoor gatherings.
Groups like the Chorus of Westerly, the United Theatre, the La Grua Center, the Granite Theatre, the Arts Café Mystic, Trinity Rep and the Gamm experimented with new ways to reach their audiences. They partnered with other organizations, and they turned to Zoom and YouTube and Soundscape and the great outdoors as they wrestled with how best to entertain and inspire their weary supporters starved for music, theatre, film and fun.
