MRA ARREST FIVE TOP MAPETO DWS OFFICIALS OVER ALLEGED TECHNICAL SMUGGLING

The Police in Blantyre through The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have arrested five senior Mapeto David Whiteheads and Sons (DWS) officials on charges sounding technical smuggling.
The five are Director Faizal Gaffar Latif, Managing Director Mohamed Gaffar, Financial Controller Abdul Rashid Bakali, Procurement Manager Yaseen Muhammad, and General Manager Martin Chapasi-Mpata.
According to the information FaceofMalawi sourced, the rest were arrested on Friday, May 21 while Faizal Gaffar Latif surrenders himself to MRA over the weekend.
Mapeto DWS is allegedly being accused of declaring fabrics as raw materials, under-declaring sales, as well as under-declaring salaries for expatriates.
According to MRA head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma the authority has for the past 4 weeks been investigating the 5 following a tip from the public. ....

MRA says truck with smuggled cooking oil was under escort

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has stressed that it is vigilant against all form of smuggling, including that of cooking oil.
This follows a development that took place on Tuesday when a truck with Mozambican registration number was involved in an accident on Friday near Magalasi on the road to Chileka in Blantyre and as the owners were transferring its goods to another truck on Monday, it was exposed to have been carrying cooking oil from Mozambique.
Sources told Nyasa Times on Tuesday alleging that the cooking oil was being smuggled to Mwanza border from Muluzi border in Mulanje.
A source, who shared pictures of the truck and its contents in 20litre containers, had alleged that the goods on the truck was originally covered with a tarpaulin and as it was being transferred to the relief truck, they thought it was smuggling cooking oil. ....

MRA to roll out automated withholding VAT system from June 1

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is set to role out an automated withholding value added tax (VAT) system to ensure efficient and effective operations of the scheme.
In a statement issued in the media says the system will interface with appointed withholding VAT agents and all suppliers of goods and services.
MRA says the introduction of the automated system is in line with the VAT-Withholding Agents Regulations of 2018.
The appointed Withholding VAT agents levied on supply of goods from individuals and business entities include government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
