CAMA asks cooking oil manufacturers to engage farmers


Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) Executive Director, John Kapito has suggested that perhaps the cooking oil manufacturers should engage farmers to grow more of the raw materials their industry need such as soya, groundnuts, sunflower and others.
Kapito made the suggestion when CAMA in collaboration with Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) asked the manufacturers not continue attributing that the current price increase of refined cooking oil is due to the 16.5% value added tax (VAT) which government re-introduced last year.

Kapito said, according to their findings on the grounds, the current price increase of refined cooking oil is due to many factors, including the increase in globally price of the imported crude oil, which the manufacturers themselves disclosed during the press conference CAMA organised at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre on Wednesday. ....

Horror! MRA, Immigration officers die after their car plunged into a flooded Kyungu River


A Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officer and his other two friends from the Immigration Department officer, are reported to have died on Wednesday night after the car they were travelling in plunged into a flooded river whose bridge had been washed away by strong rain water flow in Karonga.
MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma could only confirm the deaths of the MRA officer and the other two but could not yet identify their man nor the other victims.
Reports are that the three, who were stationed at Songwe Border, drove to Karonga Boma and on their way back at night they failed to notice that the bridge at Kyungu River had been washed away by heavy rain water flow. ....

In our follow-up on the matters, MRA management and board of directors clearly admitted to have grown a cold feet regarding implementing ACB’s directive about the people behind the recruitment mess at the tax collector.

MRA To Continue Fighting Tax Evasion, Smuggling

Thyolo, Mana: Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has said it was committed to ensuring that taxpayers adhere to voluntary tax compliance as the revenue authority continues with strategies to deal with tax evasion, smuggling and tax fraud.
MRA has put up several strategies – Kapoloma
In an interview, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma said the authority was always grateful to taxpayers who voluntarily pay taxes in good time while regretting the tendency by some businesses people and companies that fail to pay tax for various reasons.
“We encourage such people to visit MRA offices so that we can address their challenges to make them to comply with tax obligations,” he said Thursday, that MRA would ensure that  tax payers are responsible enough to pay their tax and abide by all tax obligations in good time. ....
