UFV shuts down all athletics due to new COVID-19 restrictions

As of last week, UFV has indefinitely paused their athletic teams
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, UFV Athletics has indefinitely paused their athletics department until further notice. The statement released on March 29 confirms that all team activities are paused; however, certain recreational facilities can stay open in limited fashion. Despite this announcement, the department had planned for a break leading into their summer season, but this now accelerates that plan. Most Cascades teams/athletes were not competing anyways, and there is still no word on a potential baseball season for UFV’s championship-quality squad.
Dan Kinvig, communication coordinator for the Cascades, confirmed that despite these new restrictions, no years of eligibility will be stripped from players due to COVID-19 protocols. This does, however, potentially signal the conclusion of a number of player’s careers at UFV due to their degrees being finished. With no reason to continue going to ....

The sound of gunfire at the Chilliwack CEP campus may be replaced with whistle-blowing and grunting next year.
Once the RCMP base is finished with the property next to CEP, the shooting range will be an empty space for UFV. Director of athletics and campus recreation Steve Tuckwood says that the shooting range beside the Chilliwack CEP campus could be repurposed into a recreation facility, though there is not formal proposal to date.
According to Tuckwood, the space is too small to house a large recreation facility, so the potential centre would include an artificial turf in addition to an indoor rock-climbing wall and a weight room. ....

Cascades' hiatus continues after provincial health order extended until Feb. 5

The ban extension comes as cases rise for B.C. As COVID-19 cases trended downward toward the new year, the chances of UFV Athletics playing again seemed to be going up. However, the Cascades will not see their seasons or even scrimmages start in January, as the latest extension of a ban on social gatherings till […] ....

UFV Cascades preparing to return to competition

Many teams have stopped their training due to the spread of COVID-19
Cascades teams were set to compete in 2020, but the continued spread of COVID-19 caused teams to halt operations in the fall. The move was tough for the programs and impacted each one differently, as some were set to play scrimmage games, while most were planning to coordinate some sort of playing schedule for 2021. UFV director of athletics and campus recreation Steve Tuckwood explained how there were negatives throughout last year, but also positives.
“It was challenging on many levels, mostly the fact that athletes were apart and not training [or] playing together,” Tuckwood said. “Successes would include that we did have access to weight training and some practices and most, if not all, of the athletes remained engaged throughout. They showed great resilience.” ....
