RI education commissioner hopes to have interim superintendent in Providence by week s end

PROVIDENCE State education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green on Tuesday said she hopes to select an interim superintendent for Providence by the end of the week. 
In her first public comments since Supt. Harrison Peters stepped down Friday, Infante-Green also announced that students will return to classrooms this fall, with no distance learning options. 
“It will be business as usual come September,” she said.  
New York City, the nation’s largest school district, announced Monday that all of its students would return in person in September. In Rhode Island, elementary schools began returning in person last fall but many middle and high schools remained on a hybrid schedule, with students learning remotely part of the week.  ....

Poll: Nearly half of Rhode Islanders don t trust state to spend stimulus money wisely

Rhode Islanders are skeptical that state leaders will spend the coming windfall of federal pandemic aid well and would be happiest to see it used on grants to small businesses and enhanced school programs, according to a poll released Wednesday by Bryant University s Hassenfeld Institute. 
In the telephone poll of 400 Rhode Island voters, 48% of respondents said they do not trust elected officials in Rhode Island to spend more than $2 billion from the American Rescue Plan wisely. (The Rescue Plan passed by Congress earlier this year is set to deliver $1.78 billion in unrestricted aid to Rhode Island, $1.1 billion of that to state government.) ....
