PROVIDENCE – Lifespan is seeking volunteers to enroll in a Phase 3 safety and efficacy trial of a new COVID-19 vaccine being developed by Novavax, a Maryland-based company.
The Brown-affiliated health-care system is one of about 115 sites in the United States and Mexico participating in the trial, which began at the end of December.
“Lifespan has been gearing up for this for months,” Lifespan president and CEO Dr. Timothy J. Babineau said during an online media briefing Thursday. He was joined by Dr. Karen Tashima, director of clinical trials at the Lifespan Immunology Center, and Lifespan Vice President of Research Michael Henderson, who called the Novavax trial “exciting.” ....

PROVIDENCE One looks forward to date nights with his wife. Another to losing weight. And more than one to eating, drinking and shopping locally in 2021 to help the state s shop owners and restaurateurs rebound from the COVID-19 gut punch.
And it is probably fair to say, they are all each and every one of them happy to say goodbye to this year of disruption, isolation and unrelenting sadness  and, in more than one case, to launch their bids to replace the term-limited Gina Raimondo as governor. ....

PROVIDENCE  House Speaker-elect Joseph Shekarchi said it might be time for a “pause” on the expansion of charter schools, alluding to a recent op-ed in the Journal by state Rep. Gregg Amore calling for such action.
“It seems to me it was a large number of charters” that were approved last week, Shekarski told the Journal on Tuesday.  “It wasn’t just one or two. I think it was maybe six. I don’t know enough about the issue but it seems like a lot. Maybe it’s time for a pause…” ....

Testimonials in favor of the charter schools dominated at first, as parents, staff, former students and the person who would become principal if the proposal was approved were called on in the order they signed up. Each could speak for two minutes, and if the time ran out mid-sentence, the speaker could finish that sentence only.  ....
