City engineer recognized for efforts to make island safer for pedestrians

Key West Engineering Director Steve McAlearney took the opportunity to thank the city’s outgoing multimodal transportation coordinator Tim Staub.
Although he’s only been on the job two and a half years, McAlearney noted that he really created the position, creating a master plan, working on changing ordinances, all with the goal of making the island safer for bicycles and pedestrians.
“He was all-in from the get go,” McAlearney said at the last City Commission meeting. “He sold his car before he came here, and made it work. He has had an outsized influence while he was here.”
McAlearney said he is leaving for a good reason: to pursue a graduate degree in urban planning and policy at Rutgers. Hopefully, says McAlearney, the city can get him back here after to serve in the Planning Department. ....

Contaminated soil further delays affordable housing on College Road

Additional soil contamination near the site of the planned workforce housing development on College Road has further delayed the start of construction on the affordable rental complex.
A new, small area of pesticide-contaminated soil on city-owned land off College Road on Stock Island needs to be removed before the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will give the go-ahead for construction to begin. The location of the polluted soil is a parcel adjacent to the planned housing complex currently rented by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority. It should be removed sometime next week, according to Steve McAlearney, city engineering director.
“It’s very small, a few truckloads [of contaminated soil], if that,” he said. ....

3.2 timeline gets pushback from BVRAC

A proposed timeline to jumpstart construction of affordable workforce housing on a 3.2-acre parcel in Bahama Village met with some resistance Thursday, May 6, at a meeting of the Bahama Village Redevelopment Advisory Committee.
Key West strategic plan consultant Elisa Levy presented the proposed timeline as well as other development options for the project to BVRAC members to get their input. City officials are trying to speed the process of finding a developer in order to meet an April 2022 deadline for a state grant that could fund a large part of the cost. While that is almost a year away, the contractor Request for Proposals (RFP) process can take a year or more to complete. ....

Bahama Village Community Center moving ahead

After delays, design changes and other interruptions that have slowed construction on the new community center in Bahama Village, the project is moving toward a final design approval by city officials.
The Key West Planning Board and city’s Tree Commission have signed off on the plans, which call for a 9,500-square-foot, $4-million building located next to the Douglass Gym on Olivia Street. The Historic Architectural Review Commission is scheduled to take a last look at the design at its Wednesday, April 28, meeting. If HARC members approve the design, it goes to the Key West City Commission for a final approval. ....
