Seismologist: St Vincent 'orange zone' residents can go home

WHILE he said it would be premature to say the La Soufriere volcano is going back to sleep, seismologist and vulcanologist Roderick Stewart has said residents of the orange zone can begin returning to their homes.
He said the volcano s activity is quieting down.
It is almost a month since the St Vincent volcano erupted. It has left many areas coated in ash and others affected by lahars (mudflow).
Residents of the northern part of the island (the red zone) were evacuated and have been staying at the homes of friends and family, at hotels or one of the 80-plus designated shelters. ....

Jubari Phillips, 16, instinctively jumped into action when he realised his house was on fire – with his family locked inside.
The fourth form Bishop’s High School student is being hailed a hero, after he rescued his seven-member family from their burning home at George Street, Glamorgan on Monday. The family includes four adults, aged 86, 59, 55 and 32, and his two siblings, 13 and ten.
In an interview, Phillips told Newsday he was scared by the ordeal, but: “I couldn’t have left my great-granny.” ....

THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre on Sunday afternoon reported another explosive eruption at La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent
The research centre issued a statement minutes later saying, At 4:49 pm on 18/04/21, there was another explosive eruption at LS (La Soufriere). It s been 52 hours since the last explosive event.
It said there had been at least 30 identifiable explosive events since the start of this eruptive phase.
The statement said the seismic research centre would continue to monitor and provide updates in the evening s advisory. ....

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF SPC) has given the UWI Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) a US$17,150 grant to support its monitoring efforts during the ongoing eruption of the La Soufrière volcano in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
In a release, the centre said the grant will fund equipment to strengthen the network, rebuild existing monitoring sites and provide back-up equipment for this ongoing event.
New communication and ground deformation equipment will now be added to those already deployed, increasing the UWI-SRC’s capacity to understand the volcano’s eruptive processes and provide advanced warning of hazardous activity to the Vincentian population in the future. ....

THE three children left behind in volcano-hit St Vincent when 75 TT nationals were brought home by the Galleons Passage fast ferry will soon be brought back to Trinidad and Tobago, well-placed sources told Newsday on Friday.
A plan is being finalised to bring them home in the near future, likely utilising one of our Coast Guard vessels, a source told Newsday speaking anonymously.
On Tuesday the ferry took Defence Force troops and relief supplies to St Vincent after the La Soufriere eruptions and on its return trip it evacuated TT nationals from the disaster zone. ....
