Aiming to repair the fabric of trust between police and communities of color, Boston Mayor Kim Janey unveiled a series of reforms Tuesday including the launch of a new law enforcement oversight office tasked out of the gate with reviewing the case of a former top officer who kept his job after allegedly sexually assaulting a child.
Janey announced that her fiscal year 2022 budget recommendation set to be released Wednesday would slash Boston Police Department overtime spending by $21 million, a third lower than the current fiscal year, and would direct $1 million to stand up an Office of Police Accountability and Transparency. ....

Homicide victim’s family wants his life remembered

His name was Brandon Williams, and he was a father, son, boyfriend, and dedicated employee.
Earlier this month Williams became a homicide victim in Dorchester, and his killing — he was shot to death in a parked car — sparked a controversy that was about everything except what it should have been about.
His death was essentially announced by his neighbor, Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia, and somehow turned into a story dominated by Mejia herself.
In a series of social media posts, Mejia used the occasion of Williams’s death to call attention to what she referred to as a community “living in fear” of violence. This was punctuated by a since-deleted Facebook Live post by Mejia from the scene of the crime that night, widely regarded as insensitive and intrusive. ....

Two words that got used a lot in 2020 are resilience and pivot. The former is always a good thing; the latter we d be happy to dump in the vocabulary dustbin. Pivoting was what everyone on the planet was forced to do this year when the coronavirus arrived most definitely including the creative sector. The cancellations of performances and exhibitions, the closure of venues, and the loss of income for many artists and arts organizations were severe blows; we may not yet know the full extent of the effects.
In response, creatives got, well, creative. It didn t take long for nearly every kind of artist to reposition themselves online. Many learned recording and livestreaming skills and realized far-reaching opportunities; none of that will disappear when the virus does.
