Work will start next week on the full rebuild of Leisurelink‘s 50-metre swimming pool. The Council has awarded a contract for the major construction project to AW Nicholson Pty Ltd. The contract, worth $4,708,099 (excluding GST), will see AW Nicholson demolish the existing pool and replace it with a tiled 50-metre concrete pool. Improvements will also be made to the waterslide, splash park pumps and water supply. Date Time Waterway wildlife reserve to open for public use A 20-year plan to open up a large new wetlands park for nature-based activities in Geelong’s south has been adopted by Council. The Sparrovale Wetlands Master Plan will guide protection and enhancement measures for a 500-hectare site in Charlemont, adjacent to the Lake Connewarre State Game Reserve. The Master Plan aims to ensure environmental protection, a staged opening of the wetlands park and the creation of a regional gateway to the Lake Connewarre area. The City acquired the land in 2019 to provide an end-of-drainage solution for the stormwater from the Armstrong Creek and Horseshoe Bend development precincts. ....

Mildura became the third regional area to record new cases connected to the current outbreak after cases were detected in Barwon Heads and on Phillip Island, prompting the state government to cast doubt on an early end to the lockdown for regional Victoria. The number of exposure sites at Phillip Island grew to more than 20 on Sunday, after a group of friends visited for several days last week. Two of them later tested positive for COVID-19. Date Time Geelong Swimming Club named state’s best The City of Greater Geelong congratulates the Geelong Swimming Club (GSC) on being named Swimming Victoria’s Club of the Year for 2020-21. The club’s success over a strong field of nominations from across the state was announced at the Swimming Victoria Awards held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday afternoon. The club, which is based at the City-managed Kardinia Aquatic Centre, was recognised for its strong performance in financial and club management, membership growth, and inclusion. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the GSC increased its membership base by 78 per cent in 2020 while offering reduced fees during the period of forced closure. ....
