It was in 1849 that welch pioneers came to the valley and they sang in harmony and welch. They decided you need to be the nucleus. It started in 1849. They used to sing in the tabernacle. When that was too small they started building this particular building which was in the late 1860s. It was completed at the end of the civil war. The tabernacle here has been the home of the choir ever since. As we had voisitors come one of the things they first noticed is the organ. It is right there and has been accompanying since the organ was put in. It has been around even longer. This is older than the temple itself. The oldest thing inside is this organ case. These gold pipes next to me here have looked down on decades and decades of history. So a lot of history in this organ case and in the building. The soupd of the tabernacle organist is really unique. This ceiling does a remarkable ceils of projecting the soupd no the back of the room. It is like a warm bath when you hear this organ play. W ....

Cable tv for about a week or two. It was pretty painful to live through that. And i think within a week or so dr. Bob iii decided that it did hurt the school and our Spiritual Ministry so he dropped the rule. I guess it was a few years later steven jones, the next president , apologized. I think in that apology he had the best rationale for it. In the end it wasnt about religious liberty. It was about i think im maybe paraphrasing but that we were too captive to our culture. I deally for christians and hopefully we take our faith very seriously and we want to transcenddeally for christians hopefully we take our faith very seriously and we want to transcend the world, especially what we consider to be evil in the world and we simply didnt transcend what we should have. If we use them as a kind of historical lands and focus on the period from the 1960s to the present, the last half a century or so, that can tell us a lot about how we as a country move from a relatively liberal political heir to a much more conservative political air. Whether that is changing, were in a shadow of the 2012 election, we dont know yet. I think its still too early to tell. But certainly the last generation or two of american politics has been dominated by a more conservative orientation of the whole political culture. And i think using the family, something that we are all familiar with and comfortable with as a lens to really tell us a lot about that transformation. Arrive at the top of the steps and look in and see the shelves filled with books. It is inspiring. I love when we have visitors coming for the first time. A walk in the front door and usually the first thing i hear is a giant gas. And then the next word out of their mouth is that this is what a library should look like. Part of what i find overwhelming the totally gratifying is that this institution has existed for hundreds of years. Everyday when i come into work i get to contribute to history. The athenaeum is in the historic section of providence, rhode island. We are one of 17 membership libraries in the country today. The providence athenaeum is one of two museums. We have one that actually predates us. The word athenaeum comes from the greek idea of learning and it is so fitting that architecturally based on the greek revival style, it fits very well. But a they athenaeum was a place where people came to converse and talk about their ideology. Their theologies and their sciences. ....
