A federal lawsuit was filed this week alleging that excessive use of force and indifference by Stamford police resulted in the death of a mentally ill 23-year-old man in 2019. Steven Barrier’s family, their lawyer and the Connecticut Legal Rights Project said the city’s policies led to indifference to Barrier’s need for treatment. In police body camera video released by the Stamford state’s attorney, some of Barrier s last words can be heard as he tells police he can’t get up and is too tired to walk while officers shout at him. He died that night in police custody. ....

Karen Chavez-Euceda, age 36, of Stamford, was arrested on Saturday, Feb. 20, for the incident which took place on Saturday, June 13, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, of the Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad. According to Booth, Stamford Police responded to a report of a vehicle crash in which a 2005 Nissan Altima was driving inside Cummings Park at a high rate of speed before crashing into a stone wall as Chavez-Euceda tried to negotiate a curve in the roadway. ....

According to Stamford police, the blood-alcohol level of Karen Chavez-Euceda, 36, was measured at three times over the legal limit on June 13 when she crashed her 2005 Nissan Altima into a stone wall. The car, police said, “was being operated inside the park at a high rate of speed and crashed into a stone wall as the operator tried to negotiate a curve in the roadway.” ....
