3 years after the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, 25 people from South Carolina have been charged for their alleged involvement with the breach.
“Everyone has different opinions these days about everything abortion, guns, politics, you name it,” the judge told the South Carolina couple. “But we have to express our disagreements in a lawful way.”
Andrew Hatley, who was
the first known South Carolinian to be charged in connection to riot. Hatley is accused of breaching the Capitol and taking a selfie in front of a statue of John C. Calhoun, a South Carolina native and former vice president of the United States. Criminal charges were filed against Hatley on Jan. 15.
A federal complaint charges that Hatley knowingly entered a restricted building without lawful authority, knowingly impeded government business, engaged in disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and demonstrated or picketed in the Capitol buildings.
He was identified through witnesses, photographs and a cellphone tracking application, according to the federal complaint.
