CORPUS CHRISTI – South Texas’ formerly conjoined twins are doing well, five years after their groundbreaking separation surgery at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
That surgery, on April 12, 2016, was the separation surgery of conjoined twins in a triplet birth, which has the odds of happening one in 50 million births.
No one at Driscoll Children’s Hospital had ever attempted such a complicated procedure. After many months of intense preparation, fourteen physicians (led by Pediatric Surgeon Haroon Patel, MD) and a staff of medical professionals were ready to do whatever had to be done to offer the hope of a normal life to the conjoined twins. ....

Formerly conjoined Texas sisters lead healthy lives years after surgery


In 2021, Scarlett and Ximena Torres, of Brownsville, can be seen running, smiling and playing together, alongside their identical sister, Catalina. 
At a recent check up at Driscoll Children’s Specialty Center-Harlingen, the three children could not stop moving, interacting with the staff or laughing. 
Five years ago, all that seemed impossible. 
The conjoined twins were born in May 2015 in a triplet birth. The odds of that happening was one in 50 million births. The two were fused below the waist and shared a colon and bladders.
In a video provided Friday by Driscoll Children s Hospital, pediatric surgeon Dr. Haroon Patel, who led the surgery in 2016, said it s amazing to see the formerly-conjoined twins moving as freely as are.  ....
