CORPUS CHRISTI – South Texas’ formerly conjoined twins are doing well, five years after their groundbreaking separation surgery at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
That surgery, on April 12, 2016, was the separation surgery of conjoined twins in a triplet birth, which has the odds of happening one in 50 million births.
No one at Driscoll Children’s Hospital had ever attempted such a complicated procedure. After many months of intense preparation, fourteen physicians (led by Pediatric Surgeon Haroon Patel, MD) and a staff of medical professionals were ready to do whatever had to be done to offer the hope of a normal life to the conjoined twins.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas Monday marks the five year anniversary of the day that a set of conjoined twin girls named Ximena and Scarlett Torres of Brownsville were surgically separated at Driscoll Children s Hospital. It was as you may remember, a history making surgery.
We are happy to report the girls are doing just fine, and are full of energy, laughter, and smiles.
The girls were joined at the pelvis. Their surgery came 11 months after their birth. They were actually born as a set of triplets. Their sister is also said to be doing fine.
“We don’t care if they are conjoined, they get separated or not that's something God sent us to take care of, and we are going to do the best (we can),” said Roel Torrez, the babies' father.

It s been five years since conjoined twin girls from Brownsville were separated in a Corpus Christi hospital.
Doctors say it s rare to see conjoined twins in a triplet birth, but even more rare that they are all alive and well. To date, there has never been a survival of a set of conjoined twins in a triplet pregnancy,” said pediatric surgeon Dr. Haroon Patel, M.D.
