East Jerusalem: UN experts deplore brutal police response to protests, urge eviction threats to be lifted
GENEVA (11 May 2021) - UN human rights experts today expressed grave concerns about Israel s aggressive response to protests in East Jerusalem, and called on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately lift its threat to evict hundreds of Palestinian households from their legally-protected homes.
Re-establishing calm in Jerusalem is important, but creating the conditions for justice and equality in the City are even more important, the experts said. Neither short-term calm nor long-term peace will be accomplished as long as the national and individual rights of the City s Palestinian population are routinely abrogated. ....

One year after: Authorities must comply with Federal High Court decision to release Mubarak Bala on bail
GENEVA (28 April 2021) – UN experts today called on Nigerian authorities to comply with the decision of the Federal High Court to release the prominent humanist and rights defender Mubarak Bala on bail.
“Today marks one year since Mr. Bala was arrested and detained in Kano State, without any formal charges, on allegations of blasphemy. His arbitrary detention has continued despite our appeals to the Government in May and July last year,” the human rights experts said.
As president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, Mr. Bala had led human rights education campaigns promoting freedom of religion or belief and worked to raise awareness about religious extremism. His arrest on 28 April 2020 followed a petition filed with Kano police a day earlier alleging that he had insulted the Prophet Muhammad in Facebook posts. ....

OHCHR | USA: Shackling of aged inmate, Mumia Abu-Jamal, is deplorable

USA: Shackling of aged inmate, Mumia Abu-Jamal, is deplorable - UN experts
GENEVA (20 April 2021) – UN human rights experts expressed serious concerns about the treatment and welfare of Mumia Abu-Jamal, an African-American man who has been in jail for 40 years in Pennsylvania, and is reportedly shackled to his hospital bed. Mr. Abu-Jamal had already been shackled to his bed during a four-day hospitalization in late February while being treated for heart failure.
Mr. Abu-Jamal has been denied visits from his family and access to his lawyers and spiritual advisor after being admitted to an undisclosed hospital around 10 April, where he will reportedly undergo surgery. This ongoing and continuing cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, including deliberate disregard of his dignity and inhumane conditions of confinement, is a clear violation of Mr. Abu-Jamal s most fundamental rights, the experts added. Neither his family nor lawyers have been informed of his medica ....
