East Flat Rock News: LIVE COVERAGE: Planning Board hears asphalt plant request

The vote came after two hours of public comment and questions.
After Bruce Hatfield made the motion to recommend denial of the rezoning, seconded by Jim Miller, those two were joined by Hunter Marks, Jennifer Balkcom and chairman Steve Dozier voting for the motion. Voting no, and favoring a positive recommendation on the request, were Baird Blake and Paul Patterson.
Southeastern Asphalt Co. owner Jeff Shipman refiled the rezoning application in March after withdrawing the request in December. Amid a large uprising against the plant, the Planning Board voted in August to recommend that the Board of Commissioners deny the rezoning request. Shipman opened the presentation of the rezoning request by addressing concerns neighbors had expressed about his clearing of the site of the proposed plant, on Spartanburg Highway at the U.S. 25 Connector. ....

Henderson County Business: Chick-Fil-A grand opening is Tuesday

The popular chicken, waffle fries and milkshake specialist will hold its grand opening on Tuesday and offer a drive-thru mobile ordering option the day before, on Monday. The store has received its certificate of occupancy and is on track to open the doors, manager Joel Benson said.
The Atlanta-based chicken sandwich chain plans to open 130 stores this year, and it often receives request from chicken sandwich fans that want one in their town. Hendersonville was chosen for a second Chick-Fil-A when store location scouts saw the growth in the Spartanburg Highway area. “That means you beat out places like Houston, Texas, New York City, L.A., Las Vegas,” Benson told a gathering at a groundbreaking in November. ....

Henderson County News: Asphalt plant 'not trying to destroy Mother Earth,' Shipman says

“There’s not any to be had,” he said. “We’re meeting all the health and safety requirements that we’re required to and all the setbacks required by the county. We just tried to use the time (after withdrawing a rezoning application in December) to find something else and there’s just nothing else available.”
The refiling of the application reignited a broad campaign by neighboring property owners, recreation groups, environmental activists and homeowners to stop the rezoning. Clearly exasperated with what he regards as uninformed messaging by the opponents, Shipman said in an interview with the Lightning that people are not bothering to fairly weigh the issue. ....

Plans revived for asphalt plant in East Flat Rock; Compatibility meeting scheduled
The applicant is listed as HS Shipman, and the owner as Jeffrey B. Shipman Enterprises Inc.
Several neighbors and community members were against the project when it was proposed last year. An online petition, Facebook group and website were created to speak out against construction of the plant.
The county’s planning board passed an unfavorable recommendation for the rezoning last August. Jeff Shipman of SE Asphalt soon after pulled the application before it could be brought before the Henderson County Board of Commissioners. He hinted at reapplying again in the future. ....

Eagle Self Storage looking to open fourth location

Eagle Self Storage is looking to open a fourth location in Henderson County.
A neighborhood compatibility meeting was held Monday to get public input on the proposed development for 2310 Asheville Highway in Hendersonville, near Advance Auto Parts and Stan s Electronics.
There were no comments or questions from the public during the meeting.
Seven buildings are proposed for the 7.4-acre site that will total 99,330 square feet and house regular storage units as well as units large enough for RVs.
The zoning application states the new facility will be a visually attractive and orderly development.
The first Eagle Self Storage facility, on Spartanburg Highway in East Flat Rock, opened 16 years ago. The other facilities are located on South Allen Road in Flat Rock and Airport Road in Hendersonville. ....
