Softball: New SGM finds strength, but not enough to beat Babylon

In unity there is strength. The unified Southold/Greenport/Mattituck softball team, without question, is stronger than either the Southold/Greenport and Mattituck teams would have been on their own this season had they not merged.
Softball numbers have been low on the North Fork in recent years, prompting concern and, finally, action the creation of Southold/Greenport/Mattituck. One team representing three high schools.
“We haven’t had a junior high program the last three years in Mattituck,” coach Kim Gerstung said. “You know, you can’t build programs without junior high. So, it’s been in the talking [stage] for the past couple of years. Southold would have had a JV last year, but not two years previous to that, so it’s just numbers-wise, if we didn’t combine this year [Mattituck] wo ....

Track teams brave conditions for successful meet: Take on large schools on the road

Saturday, Jan. 23 was 28 degrees with a windchill of 16 degrees not exactly ideal racing conditions. However, Shelter Island’s girls track team bundled up and made the trip over to Babylon under bright blue skies for their second meet of the season to compete against Babylon and Southold/Greenport.
The team had their full roster of nine athletes. Southold had an equal number, while Babylon had 30 girls available. In track, each athlete is limited to three events, so a small team can not enter as many events as a larger school, which makes it difficult to win a meet. Babylon scored 75 points to Shelter Island’s 15, while the Southold/Shelter Island head to head score was quite close at 36 to 32. ....

Track & Field: Greenport senior shines in season-opening loss

Kevin Azama is making up for lost time.
It had been a long time since Azama last competed in a track and field meet (thank you, coronavirus pandemic). Too long, he figured. The Greenport High School senior was itching to get back into competition.
“It feels great,” he said. “It’s been so long. It’s been a long wait. I’ve been looking forward to having this moment.”
As good as Azama felt, he may have looked even better Sunday, winning all three of his events in Southold/Greenport’s 76-28 season-opening Suffolk County League VIII loss at Port Jefferson. ....

Winter track approaches starting line with new look due to COVID-19 regulations

It will be a high school winter track season for boys and girls like no other.
Dual meets only, outdoors! Athletes wearing face masks and in some cases gloves while competing. Equipment in field events being sanitized between use. No invitationals. No postseason meets. No spectators.
This is what winter track in the age of the coronavirus looks like.
“This is going to be wild, to say the least,” Mattituck boys coach Chris Cavanaugh said of the season that starts this weekend and runs through Feb. 14.
“All these things will add up to it being a very different season that we haven’t seen before, but that’s exciting, too,” said Mattituck senior Luke Altman. ....
